The camp duo of C-3PO and R2-D2 might seem to be a waste of time, once they have stolen all the tech required for the Alliance to advance, but as we discovered -

Can they be of more service?

Icons of the Star Wars universe, the two heroic droids after often seen in the thick of trouble - most of it self made, if you believe the claims of protocol droid C-3PO.

Much like in the movies, the droids here are nothing more than vital to the Rebel Alliance. Why? Well, in addition to the ability to stealing technology from the Empire, thus increasing the Alliances' own tech levels, they can play an important part in both spy missions and ground battles, with the latter providing the droids with a couple of important roles.
First off though, its the 'hide and seek' game. By placing the droids above an Imperial planet, can provide information of Star fleets and Space stations, whilst on the ground - information is gathered about hero units present and any structures on the surface.

With this valuable information, the Rebels can plan their next move. A raid party perhaps, to take out the Hyper velocity guns on the planet, before sending in a bigger fleet?

The presence of the droids provides the Alliance with so many additional tactical options when planning the next attack.
The damage doesn't look as bad from up here R2.

When engaged in ground battles, the droids play a vital role again. They don't take up any population count, so their presence won't have an impact on how many units you can deploy - and they can capture Population points.

R2 loves all the excitement of ground battles. The laser blasts flying around as forces engage in hard fought battles. 3PO might blow a socket when they are called in to assist but when you have vehicles that are badly damaged, R2 can swiftly move in to repair units to full health and with a short cool down timer, he can repair a handful pretty quickly.

During the exchanges, they can both be drafted in to capture turrets and build pads. R2 plugs into the Imperial network to switch the turret to the Alliance, while 3PO shouts abuse and screams like a girl as he still has flash backs to what happened to him on Geonosis!
C-3PO donates some of his parts to repair this T4-B tank.
